Dear Neighbor:
On Tuesday, September 15th, the Belmont Bay Neighborhood Watch will be holding a meeting sponsored by the Concerned Citizens United for Belmont Bay on neighborhood safety with our Supervisor Jeannie LaCroix, Police Chief Peter Newsham and Fire and Rescue Chief Thomas LaBelle. If you have any concerns on neighborhood safety or just want to learn more about our neighborhood watch program, which covers all of Belmont Bay and Riverbend Estates, please stop by the Library after 6:30 pm.
Additionally, you may have seen that signs placed by a neighbor at the entrance to our Riverbend Estates neighborhood discussing the need to stop littering and keep the Regency Intersection clean, were torn down and left to rot. If you know who are neighbor is that is helping keep the trash down, please thank them and ask them to contact us. We have been cleaning that corner for years and were delighted that someone else stepped up to help.
Finally, the George Mason University Science Center has proposed a new 615-foot pier to take their classes to a research vessel they just purchased so it can access navigable waters over the wetlands. The pier will have nearly 8 feet of clearance… plenty for canoers or kayakers, and not interfere in the navigation of the channel, with a minimum of 40 feet from the channel to the dock vessels. If you have any concerns, please let us know. Concerned Citizens believes GMU’s contributions to keeping our environment and river clean, its monitoring and its research on fisheries, is a tremendous asset, and we support their plans wholeheartedly.
A group of paddlers suggested the 7-foot 9-inch clearance might not be enough, which we believe is not a valid concern and even recommended dredging the wetlands (which is a nonstarter causing severe environmental damage).
We hope to see you at the Neighborhood Watch event or of course feel free to contact us with any neighborhood concerns.
Rob
